NEW APRA HARBOR CHIEF — In a formal change of command ceremony, Friday, June 26, 2009, Chief Petty Officer Nicholas Pavlik assumed the helm at Station Apra Harbor, Guam. A boatswain's mate, Pavlik relieved Senior Chief Petty Officer Eric Benafel, who is now the second in charge at Station Cape Disappointment on the Oregon-Washington border.

COAST GUARD CUTTER CREW HOME AFTER SIX MONTHS AWAY
Family members of the crew of the Jarvis -- a 378-foot high endurance cutter -- welcomed the ship home after a six-month deployment, Wednesday, July 1, 2009. The Jarvis crew spent three months at sea on patrol in the Bering Sea and then three months in dry dock in the San Francisco Bay area, during which time a change of command was held and Capt. COAST GUARD OFFICER TALKS FISH AT OAHU HIGH SCHOOL
The 14th Coast Guard District's fisheries enforcement officer, Lt. Cmdr. Jay Caputo, recently taught classes at Moanalua High School on Oahu for the Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council Summer Course. His focus was an overview on the Coast Guard and fisheries enforcement in the western and central Pacific. He also took the students for a tour of a patrol boat at Sand Island. PHOTO 1 | PHOTO 2
COAST GUARD PRACTICES MAJOR OIL SPILL RECOVERY
The Coast Guard and Clean Islands Council (an oil spill response corporation) practiced deploying a Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS) Wednesday, June 24. The system is used to collect large amounts of oil in the event of a spill and designed to be versatile and fit on vessels 55-to-200-feet long.
