Coast Guard transports crewman off laker

MARQUETTE, Mich. - U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City medically evacuated a  42-year-old male crew member experiencing heart problems from a 1,000-foot laker off Marquette in Lake Superior Wednesday at 6 a.m.

"The position of the laker made the hoist challenging," said Lt. Paul Smith, HH-65C rescue helicopter pilot.

A rescue swimmer evaluated the crewman's health condition.

The aircrew then hoisted the man off and airlifted him to Sawyer International Airport, where an awaiting ambulance then took him to Marquette General Hospital.

The Coast Guard recommends having a marine band radio on board and notify via channel 16 for all emergencies.
